Acupuncture Treatment For Arthritis

There are many different types of arthritis but by far the most common type is osteoarthritis. It affects nearly 21 million Americans. The chance of developing the disease increases with age. Most people over age 60 have osteoarthritis to some degree. The severity of pain experienced from arthritis is determined by the extent of the undelying injury which predisposed its onset.

Activities and habits that cause arthritis include underactivity or overactivity without adequate nutritional support for repair, anti-inflammatory pain medications (these drugs inhibit collagen synthesis and stop the migration of fibroblasts sent to repair the injured tissue), steroids, mineral deficiency, and trauma. These all contribute to wearing away of the smooth cartilage.

Soft tissue injuries often start the development of degenerative joint conditions. As the connective tissue which stabilizes the structures of the joint become compromised the body grows bone spurs and calcium deposits in an attempt to stabilize loose joints and ligaments. This overgrowth of bone is called arthritis.

Acupuncture helps to stabilize the joints by causing a strengthening of connective tissue and a relaxation of muscles.  The increase in circulation and natural release of endorphins helps the body to heal the underlying injury and reduce pain. Acupuncture can help resolve arthritic pain without the devastating side affects of anti-inflammatories and pain medication. It has been used safely and effectively to treat arthritis and joint pain for centuries!
